| VK4QS | SA HIGH 15M | Hi Mike, VK4QS here, I entered this years CQ WW SSB Contest not knowing what to expect under the current Bottom end of the Cycle conditions. But as always, Nature surprises us every time with unexpected propagation to see some bands filled and others as quiet as the grave. I managed to work a total of 80 contacts, virtually all unique callsigns across the weekend. I set out with the intention of working as many as I could on 15m, if it was Open. Naturally you take whatever is available and see how the cards fall at the end of the game. I entered as SO HP 15m Assisted, using a 1/4 wave Vertical on 40m & 15m with a Spitfire Reflector off the Back for some gain and F to B Ratio. I also used a 5/8th Vertical for 20m, that also covered for 40m and 15. My rig was a Yaesu FTDX 9000, and a Solid State Homebrew Amplifier built by Glenn VK4BG. ZERO UTC is 10-Am here in Australia, and the CONTEST kicked off with local VK Activity ON 40M. Then 15m fired up here to see contacts spanning Japan,Russia,and Asia. By 3hrs UTC 20m had opened up across the same expance till about 08 after that 40m m opened up at this QTH to offer everything from Alaska to Thailand, Guam, Russia, and South America. 40m was very crowded indeed and it was a struggle to seperate stations only a Kc or two apart. The JA's were out in force which was quite good for numerous prefix variations. The next morning was tough going on 40m as Europe sort to work itself and the US while the VK's screamed in vain just to try and get through.The rest of the contest was much of the same and made for interesting contacts whilst using just a Vertical, even with the Amp. In the end, 80 odd contacts does not seem very much in the big picture, but it was fun and hard work at the same time. Many thanks to the organizers. I had some issues using TeamViewer software to feed my TX audio from my laptop in Toronto to my K3 Transceiver in California. Even though I was using PTT to key the radio, TeamViewer's audio is half-duplex and the software's apparent VOX threshold for cutting off the RX audio has no obvious adjustment and seemed to be all over the place. Nevertheless, I was really happy I was able to participate in 'The Big One' |
