• HISTORY
     Buz Reeves, K2GL 80th birthday would be arriving soon. Since this event only happens to some of us, a celebration was in order. Doug, KR2Q thought it would be nice to gather together at a party all of operators who had operated at K2GL over the years. A party was going to be a tough thing to put together and the current op's at K2GL were concerned how they could pull this thing off FOR Buz, but without intruding ON Buz. They couldn't exactly have a surprise party and have him signing some business deal in W6-land.
    KR2Q told Buz that the operators wanted to celebrate his 80th Birthday with him. Doug's plan was to have a BBQ at Buz's QTH in Tuxedo Park, NY. The operators would buy the hamburgers and hotdogs. When told of the plan, Buz said (without skipping a beat) that the party could take place at the Duck Cedar Inn (Buz's own restaurant in Tuxedo, NY), and that additionally, we should invite ALL M/M op's who operated WITH him and ALL M/M op's who also operated AGAINST him.
    This was a daunting task. KR2Q contacted Gene, N2AA to help find the names of some previous op's who had "vanished". They split up the list with Gene asking Frankford(FRC) contesters and Doug trying to find the rest. KR2Q called all over the US trying to locate previous K2GL op's and competitors. Buz's western competitors, W7RM, K6UA and N5AU were contacted. Unfortunately, for most operators outside of the YCCC, FRC, PVRC area, it was simply too far and expensive to attend. But all were invited.
    While putting the celebration together, KR2Q tried to figure out a way to honor Buz for his ham accomplishments. There was a Ham of the Year award and there was the HamVention (R). There was a DX Hall of Fame and the Visalia DX Convention. Why not a CONTEST Hall of Fame?
    KR2Q called Dick Ross, K2MGA the president of CQ Publishing and told him of the plan for the birthday party and the possibility for the creation of a CQ Contest Hall of Fame. Dick thought it was a great idea and endorsed it on the spot.
     Buz's great contributions to contesting included not only the spawning of top operators' (in that day), but the ACTUAL creation of the M/S and later the M/M categories. K2GL's history of wins is still unmatched. K1AR even described the K2GL saga of win's as a dynasty.

  The Present CQ Hall of Fame
  

• Who can nominate?
     The person must be nominated by a well known club or national organization. The nominee does not have to be a member of the nominating group. The nominating group should submit a complete summary of why their nominee is worthy of induction into the CONTEST or DX Hall of Fame. The letter of nomination must be written on club stationary or submitted via internet under the signature of a club or national organization officer.

• Guidelines
     The nominee must have contributed on a broad basis to the sport of Contesting or DXing. Being very active in contests and DXing are only part of the pre-requisites. Since each person has unique qualifications it is difficult to specify what constitutes contributions on a broad basis. As a partial guideline to nominating clubs or national organizations, persons who have been inducted in the past into a Hall of Fame have contributed in some or all of the following ways: brought new people into the hobby, formed radio clubs, organized DX funding, written books or articles about the sport, unselfishly given their time to judge contests, acted in a leadership role to organize DXpeditions, pioneered the early developed of the sport or acted as an acknowledged role model for their sport.

• Deadline
     The deadline for nominations is JANUARY 1. Nominations received after the deadline will be held over to the next year. Successful nominees will receive their plaque of induction into the CQ Hall of Fame at the Contest or DX Banquet held at the Dayton Hamvention.

   The following are members of the CQ Contest Hall of Fame. All have contributed to amateur radio in many ways. The first Hall of Fame inductee was K2GL. At his 80th birthday party held in Tuxedo Park, NY, Dick Ross, K2MGA announced the founding of the CQ Contest Hall of Fame. Since that day in 1981 there have been 23 members who have been inducted.

   The following are all the members of the CQ Contest Hall of Fame. All have contributed to amateur radio in many ways.

Below are excerpts from the nominating letters of each new member (1997).

• # 24 Carl D. Cook, AI6V nominated by the Northern California Contest Club: Carl was licensed as WA6JUD in 1968 and held a Technician Class license. After being recruited in an NCCC membership drive, Carl upgraded to General in 1976, to Advanced in 1977 and to Extra Class in 1978. Carl is a member of the Northern California Contest Club, the Southern California Contest Club, the Mount Diablo Radio Club, the Maui Radio Club, the Aruba Radio Club, the Northern California DX Club, the Northern California DX Foundation and is a life member of both ARRL and AMSAT. Carl is a past president of the NCCC. He served as Field Day Chairman for MDARC (W6CX) for five consecutive years, and as NCCC's Sweepstakes Chairperson he steered us to two national first place club titles. He holds 5B-DXCC, 7B-WAS and WAZ. NCCC selected Carl as "Contester of the Year" in 1978 and as "World Class Contester" in 1988. Carl served on the steering committee for the 1996 World Radio Team Championship, and played a major role in helping to make that event the resounding success it proved to be.
     While a Technician Class licensee, Carl scored his first Pacific Division win in the ARRL's September, 1969 VHF QSO Party. He the proceeded to win twelve more times between 1970 and 1975, setting Pacific Division records in all three annual VHF QSO parties. He also sneaked off to an Oregon mountaintop and set a new Northwestern Division record in the September VHF QSO Party.
    
• # 25 Gordon S. Marshall, W6RR nominated by the Southern California DX Club: Gordon Marshall, for many years, was a top scorer in both the CQWW and ARRL DX Contests, both regionally and nationally. His dozens of certificates and plaques earned from the Southern California DX Club attest to the esteem in which he was held by his peers for several decades during some of the most exciting times in contest operating history.
     Most recently, Mr. Marshall has received considerable public attention for his most generous gift to the Graduate School of Business at the University of Southern California, which henceforth will bear his name. In the press releases which followed the announcement of his generosity, W6RR attributed his considerable success in the electronics industry to his long-time interest in Amateur Radio. His gift to USC reportedly will be used to allow each first-year graduate business student the opportunity to study abroad; it is clear that he intends to share his ideals of international goodwill, no doubt enhanced by years of DX contest success, with future generations of business students.
    
• # 26 John Devoldere, ON4UN nominated by the Rhein Ruhr DX Association: Most of the amateurs inducted into either the CQ DX Hall of Fame or the Contest Hall of Fame are either top-notch DXers or top-notch contesters. The problem with John is that he is both and would figure very well in either Hall of Fame making his nomination unique.
     John's merits clearly lie in the field of the "Low Bands". Through his publications, "80 Meter DX-ing" published by Ham Radio in 1977, "Low Band DX-ing" published by the ARRL in 1987, and "Antennas and Techniques for the Low Bands" published by the ARRL in 1994), he has been instrumental in developing low band DXing into what it is today.
     ON4UN's first international contest successes go back to 1962 and 1965 when he won the CQ WWDX Phone contests on 80m world wide. When he scored world high in the 1969 WWDX Phone contest he set a new world record for M/S stations. More world or EU highs were to follow in single band entries in the CQ WPX 1987 and CQ WW CW in 1989. Since 1987 John has taken part in all but two issues of the CQ 160m Contest winning every single one of them on EU or world level. In 1991 John scored 1st EU (2nd world) in the CQ WW RTTY contest and he achieved EU high each year from 1990 - 1992 in the WWDX CW contest on 160m. Setting a new world record he won the 1993 WWDX in 80m CW. ON4UN's participation in ARRL DX contests have been similarly successful. Since 1992 John has taken part in all Phone and CW sections on 80 or 40m single band.
     After so much individual success in various kinds of contests, John wanted to share his fun in contesting with other operators in a team. Step by step he has developed a highly competitive multi/single station on his relatively small private lot of about 1 acre. At the same time he offered these operating facilities to top-notch contesters as well as interested newcomers from the local radio club to introduce them into the noble art of contesting.
     John has been a member of the Rhein Ruhr DX Association from its foundation more than 30 years ago. His most enlightening lectures have been continual highlights in our club meetings twice a year. Our contest association owes John a lot, and we feel deeply obliged for his long-standing contributions to our winning scores as well as for his unceasing readiness to share his knowledge with us.
    
• #27 Jorge Humberto Bozzo, LU8DQ nominated by the Radio Club Quilmes. It is our pleasure to direct this letter to the honorable CQ committee with the intention of promoting the induction of Mr. Jorge Humberto Bozzo, LU8DQ as a member of the CQ Contest Hall of Fame, as was resolved in a unanimous decision at the last annual committee meeting of the Radio Club Quilmes - Argentina. The resolution was taken considering that Jorge, who became a silent key on January 22nd 1992, was the best contester from Argentina, and one of the best in all the world. He has undoubtedly left his mark.
     Considered as one of the all time best CW operators by many contesters, his enthusiasm, operating, and station engineering skills have been an inspiration to all of us. In his CW contest career he won: The CQ World Wide 7 times, establishing 4 World Records. The CQ World Wide WPX 3 times, including 2 World Records. The ARRL International DX Contest 4 times. The ARRL 10 Meter Contest 4 times. The Worked All Europe contest 1 time, Continental Leader 9 times. Continental Leader 8 times in the All Asian
     He won the IARU HF Radiosport Championship 11 consecutive times in the Single Operator CW category. He was the top CW entrant every year since the contest's first running, from 1977 until 1987. He also won every year, from 1983 until 1990, the Argentinean International Championship, an award established by the Consejo Nacional de Radioclubes de la Republica Argentina, in the CW Multiband category.
     He deserved a special mention by the Araucaria DX Group, receiving the Award of Merit Nr.3. The Nr.1 went to the CQ Magazine and the Nr.2 to OH2BH. For all of the above reasons, we appreciate your consideration of his highly deserved induction into the CQ Contest Hall of Fame.
    
• #28 John Dorr, K1AR nominated by the Yankee Clipper Contest Club: John has won the CQWW SSB All-band USA single op category 5 times in a row, and 8 times overall. He also won the USA CQWW CW Single-op 4 times before switching to the multi-op categories, in which he and his team (operating from K1EA) won 5 times in 8 years. In the ARRL DX contest, he has won single-op USA 4 times each on CW and SSB. Recent ARRL DX multi-ops with the K1EA team have resulted in 6 CW wins in a row and 7 out of the past 8 years. John has also operated from most of the other top multi-op stations, including W2PV, W1ZM, W3AU, K0RF, and others.
     John has also operated outside the US a couple of times, winning CQWW M/S as part of the HI8XWP team in 1979, setting a world record from a North American ("2-point") country. Other DX operations included TI1J and XE2NQ. He holds and has held numerous records in all of the major contests. One of his lesser-known records is the SS EMass CW record, which has stood since 1978.
     He was one half of the 1990 WRTC Gold medal-winning team. He has been the Contest Editor of CQ Magazine since Frank Anzalone's retirement. John is a member of the CQWW Contest Committee. He took on the responsibility of the CQWW awards program. In his capacity as Manager at CQ Publishing, John promoted contesting and acted as a spokesman for CQ.
